- Be Informed
Create a network of trusted individuals, such as family, friends, co-workers, personal attendants
- Buy clothing, linens, and blankets made of fire-resistant material
- Arrange furniture so it does not obstruct a quick exit
- Attach a small go-bag to wheelchair or walker
- Contact support network members to help in evacuating a building by stairway
Memorize a few critical phrases to quickly explain your situation to first responders or write it down practice your plan regularly
- Familiarise yourself with lifting and carrying techniques that will work for you
- Practice emergency evacuation drills at least two times a year
If you use an electric wheelchair or scooter, have a manual wheelchair for backup
- Teach those who may need to assist you in an emergency
Store back-up equipment (mobility, medical, etc.) at your neighbour’s home, school, or your workplace
Know how and when to turn off water, gas and electricity at the main switches or valves
Have a transportation plan if you are unable to drive during a disaster or mandatory evacuation
Before an evacuation, gather all prescription medications in their original bottles and place them in a zippered plastic bag
Important papers like insurance policies, prescriptions, health records bank accounts etc must be saved and back up copies should be easily available
